Best Credit Cards for Rent Payments (2026)
Rent is most Americans' single largest monthly expense โ averaging $1,500โ$2,000+/month. For years, that money earned zero rewards. The Bilt Mastercard changed that in 2022, and it's still the only card that lets you pay rent without losing money to processing fees.
Here's the short version: the Bilt Mastercard is the only rent card worth having. Every other option involves a 2.5โ3% processing fee that exceeds any rewards you'd earn. The Bilt sends a check or ACH to your landlord โ no fee, 1x point per dollar, and transferable points worth ~1.7ยข each. Read our full Bilt review โ

How the Bilt Mastercard Works
The Bilt Mastercard solves the rent payment problem ingeniously: instead of charging your credit card (which triggers a 2.5โ3% processing fee), Bilt sends a physical check or ACH transfer directly to your landlord. You pay Bilt, and Bilt pays the landlord. No processing fee, no landlord involvement needed.
- How to pay: Use the Bilt app to set up your rent payment. Bilt mails a check or initiates ACH on the 1st of each month.
- What landlords accept: Bilt works regardless of your landlord's payment preferences โ they just receive a check in the mail. No special portal required.
- Rent cap: Earn 1x points on up to $2,500/month in rent payments. If your rent exceeds $2,500, you still earn on the first $2,500.
- Point value: Points are worth 1ยข for cash back, 1.25ยข+ for travel via transfer partners (Hyatt, United, Delta, etc.), or can be used toward a future down payment.
Beyond rent, the Bilt card also earns 2x on dining, 3x on travel booked through Bilt, and has Rent Day promotions on the 1st of each month (bonus points, exclusive experiences). See our full Bilt Mastercard review โ
Why You Shouldn't Pay Rent with Other Credit Cards
Most rent payment platforms (Plastx, PayRent, RentTrack) charge 2.5โ3% processing fees. Here's the math on why that destroys your rewards:
- $2,000 rent ร 3% fee = $60/month = $720/year in fees
- Best case with 2% cash back: $2,000 ร 2% = $40/month = $480/year in rewards
- Net result: You lose $240/year paying rent with most credit cards
The one exception: if you're chasing a signup bonus. Paying rent once via credit card to hit a $4,000โ$8,000 minimum spend can unlock $500โ$1,250 in bonus value. The one-time $60 fee is worth it for that. But for ongoing rent payments, the Bilt Mastercard is the only card that makes financial sense.
Bilt Day Bonus: Rent Day on the 1st
Every month on the 1st (Rent Day), Bilt offers bonus promotions:
- Double points on dining (4x instead of 2x)
- Exclusive fitness classes and events in select cities
- Refer-a-friend bonuses worth 5,000โ10,000 points
- Spend-and-get promotions (e.g., spend $X, get Y bonus points)
These promotions stack on top of the regular earning rate, making the 1st of each month the best time to make purchases.
